Why the same ounce costs different amounts
Right now a 1 oz gold bar costs $4,455.89 and a 2026 American Gold Eagle $4,554.50: the same ounce of gold, $98.61 apart.
Bars are the cheapest way to own an ounce because they are simple to make. Government coins like the Eagle cost more because the mint charges dealers extra, and they are the easiest to sell back. Small sizes cost more per ounce than large ones because every piece carries the same minting and handling cost.
The gap is widest in silver
A Silver Eagle costs $79.89 per ounce against $72.14 for a 100 oz bar, because the minting cost is a much bigger share of a single ounce of silver than of gold.
How it’s calculated
Cost per ounce = the dealer’s price ÷ the troy ounces of pure metal in the product. A 1/2 oz coin at $2,400 costs $4,800 per ounce of gold.

What is the cheapest way to buy gold by the ounce?
Generic bars and widely traded bullion coins such as the Krugerrand usually cost the least per ounce of gold. Government coins like the American Gold Eagle cost more, and fractional coins cost the most per ounce. The table above ranks live prices.
Why do Silver Eagles cost more per ounce than silver bars?
The US Mint charges dealers more for Eagles than refiners charge for bars, and every coin carries its own minting and handling cost, which is a large share of the price of a single ounce of silver. Larger bars spread that cost over more metal.
Does buying more lower the price per ounce?
Usually. Texas Precious Metals lists quantity price breaks on many products, shown under each row above as a price per ounce.
Why isn’t the premium over spot shown?
Dealers build prices on slightly different spot prices, so a premium quoted against one spot won’t match another site. Cost per ounce of metal is the same whichever spot you use, which makes it the fairest way to compare.
