14K is the most common jewelry gold in the United States — engagement rings, wedding bands, chains and watches. The karat scale runs to 24, so 14K means 14 parts gold in 24, or 58.5% by weight; the rest is silver, copper, nickel, zinc or palladium, which set the colour and hardness.
Its melt value is the pure-gold price per gram multiplied by 0.585. That is the ceiling a refiner or scrap buyer works down from — expect offers of 85–95% of melt for plain jewelry, less at pawn shops and mall kiosks. Gemstones add nothing to the melt value and are usually returned or valued separately.
To identify 14K, look for the stamp “14K”, “585” or “14KT” on the clasp or inside the band. Pieces marked “14K GF” or “14K GP” are gold-filled or gold-plated and contain only a thin layer of gold. When in doubt, an acid or XRF test at a jeweler settles it in minutes.
