22K is traditional Indian and Middle Eastern jewelry, and the alloy of the American Gold Eagle and the Krugerrand. The karat scale runs to 24, so 22K means 22 parts gold in 24, or 91.6% by weight; the rest is silver, copper, nickel, zinc or palladium, which set the colour and hardness.
Its melt value is the pure-gold price per gram multiplied by 0.916. That is the ceiling a refiner or scrap buyer works down from — expect offers of 85–95% of melt for plain jewelry, less at pawn shops and mall kiosks. Gemstones add nothing to the melt value and are usually returned or valued separately.
To identify 22K, look for the stamp “22K”, “916” or “22KT” on the clasp or inside the band. Pieces marked “22K GF” or “22K GP” are gold-filled or gold-plated and contain only a thin layer of gold. When in doubt, an acid or XRF test at a jeweler settles it in minutes.
The live figure is at the top of this page: today’s 24K spot price per gram × 0.916. It updates about once a minute.
916 is the fineness in parts per thousand — 22K gold. European and Asian jewelry usually carries the fineness number; US jewelry more often carries the karat.
Not quite. This is melt value at wholesale spot. Reputable refiners pay 85–95% of it; retail gold buyers often pay far less, so get more than one quote and weigh the piece yourself in grams first.
Jewelry carries making charges and retail margin far above its gold content, so it is a poor way to buy gold as an investment. For exposure to the price, bullion coins and bars at a small premium over spot are the usual route.
