Silver purities explained
Sterling (.925) is the standard for flatware, jewelry and hollowware and is usually stamped “925” or “Sterling”. Britannia (.958) appears on some British pieces, coin silver (.900) on older US coinage and flatware, and .800 on much continental European silver. Bullion rounds and bars are .999 fine.
Weighing tips
Knife handles are often weighted with cement or resin and should be excluded. Silver-plated items (“EPNS”, “A1”, “Silver on copper”) contain almost no recoverable silver. For circulated US coins use the junk silver calculator, which accounts for wear.

Is silver plate worth anything as scrap?
Almost nothing. Plated items (marked EPNS, A1, “silver on copper” or “quadruple plate”) carry only microns of silver, which refiners generally will not pay for.
How do I tell sterling from plate?
Look for a 925 or “Sterling” stamp (US/UK), a lion passant (UK hallmark) or 800/835/900 marks (continental Europe). A magnet should not attract solid silver.
