The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin was released in tandem with the Platinum Maple Leaf coin by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988 as a response to the continued success of the original Gold Maple Leaf coin. Comprised of 99.99% pure silver with a face value of 5 Canadian dollars, the Silver Maple Leaf coin’s purity, weight, and content are guaranteed by the Canadian government. The 1-ounce Canadian Silver Maple Leaf has gained worldwide popularity as it holds the highest silver purity composition of all government minted 1-ounce silver bullion coins.
The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt in 2003, appears on the obverse of the 2015 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin. The queen is pictured without her crown in a similar fashion to the portrait style decision of her father, King George VI, who was featured on Canadian coins from 1937 to 1952. In the background, radial lines emanate outward from Her Majesty’s engraved right-facing portrait, and her name, the coin’s face value, and the 2015 mint date are engraved around her effigy.
The iconic maple leaf of Canada appears on the reverse of the 2015 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin, as well as the Gold and Platinum Maple Leaf coins. The inauguration of the red maple leaf flag as Canada’s National Flag in 1965 marks the nationwide acknowledgement of the maple leaf as Canada’s national symbol, yet its emblematic appearance dates all the way back to the 1700s. The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coin pays tribute to the national icon with an exquisite depiction of the veined maple leaf. The bolded outline of its symmetric shape gives the maple leaf a crisp definition against the lightly patterned backdrop. The background is filled with the same radial line pattern seen on the obverse, and “Fine Silver 1 Oz Argent Pur” reads across the bottom curve of the coin. The country’s title, “Canada,” is prominently displayed across the top of the coin, and a description of the coin’s purity, “9999,” appears on both the right and the left side of the maple leaf illustration. Located to the right of the stem is a small darkened maple leaf that surrounds the number “15,” which represents the mintage year and adds defense against counterfeiting.
