The Royal Canadian Mint crafted the first Canadian Maple Leaf coin in gold and released it to the public in 1979. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin is the official gold bullion coin of Canada, and each coin is minted exclusively from gold that originated in Canadian mines. The coin is 1 troy ounce of 99.99% gold with no base metals, making it the first 24 karat gold bullion coin to ever be minted. The coin’s purity, weight, and content are guaranteed by the Canadian government, and it holds a legal tender face value of 50 Canadian dollars. The popularity of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf prompted the Royal Canadian Mint to release silver and platinum variants of the coin in 1988.
The obverse of the 2015 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt in 2003. The queen is pictured without her crown in a similar fashion to the portrait style choice of her father, King George VI, who was featured on Canadian coins from 1937 to 1952. In the background, radial lines emanate outward from Her Majesty’s engraved right-facing portrait, and she is surrounded by her name, the coin’s face value, and the 2015 mint date.
The iconic maple leaf of Canada appears on the reverse of the 2015 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin. The red maple leaf flag’s inauguration as Canada’s National Flag in 1965 marks the nationwide acknowledgement of the maple leaf as the country’s symbol, yet its emblematic appearance dates all the way back to the 1700s. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf pays tribute to the national icon with an exquisite depiction of the veined maple leaf. The bolded outline of its symmetric shape gives the maple leaf a crisp definition against the lightly patterned backdrop. The background is filled with the same radial lines seen on the obverse, and “Fine Gold 1 Oz Or Pur” reads across the bottom curve of the coin. The country’s title, “Canada,” is prominently displayed across the top of the coin, and a description of the coin’s purity, “9999,” graces both the right and left side of the maple leaf illustration. Located to the right of the stem is a small darkened maple leaf that surrounds the number “15,” which represents the mintage year and adds counterfeit defense.
