The Perth Mint, Australia's oldest operating government mint facility, released the Australian Gold Kangaroo bullion coin in 1989. Often referred to as the Australian Gold Nugget, the coin previously included an illustration of a gold nugget on its reverse design before the Perth Mint updated the theme to the kangaroo. Comprised of one troy ounce of .9999 pure gold, the Australian Gold Kangaroo holds a value of $100 AUD and no limits on mintage. The weight, purity and content of the Australian Gold Kangaroo are guaranteed by the State Government of Western Australia, and the Australian Commonwealth Government’s Currency Act of 1965 establishes the coin as legal tender.
Included on the Australian coat of arms, the kangaroo is an international symbol of Australia’s endurance and tenacity. As such, the coin’s reverse showcases their iconic marsupial in a different native setting each year it is released. The 2016 reverse design portrays a strong kangaroo in exquisite detail. Its feet, tail and ears exceed the bounds of the coin’s inner circle as it gazes over its shoulder at its brethren in the distance. In the background, a less-prominent kangaroo reflects a reverse pose. A small “P” engraved in the horizon indicates the coin’s Perth Mint origin.
Australia’s reigning monarchy is honored with a position of prominence on the obverse with the right profile of Queen Elizabeth II, showcased with meticulous detail of hair and crown by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Text along the edge identifies Her Majesty’s name, the face value of the coin and the nation’s title, “Australia."
